Thrifty Misc | Chipotle Copycat, Dainty Squid, Frugalwoods, Off-Grid Dreamin’, and No More Dryer Sheets
Welcome to Thrifty Misc: My occasional collection of quips that are too small for their own post but too much for social media.
These copycat Cilantro Lime Rice and Grilled Peppers and Onions recipes were delicious. I humbled myself to following a recipe for once, actually using the called for amount of oil and salt, and (surprise!) found these recipes to be very similar to Chipotle. In taste, not price, thank goodness.
I am generally irritated by most home decor anythings on the Internet, but I just can’t get enough of Kaylah from Dainty Squid. She recently moved into a new apartment and has been regularly sharing updates on her decor. Kaylah has the coolest and quirkiest collections and keeps them all arranged in a way that somehow isn’t cluttery. I would love to be her thrifting friend except that we would compete over the mid century furniture.
I have only recently discovered (and fell in love with!) the Frugalwoods. The Frugalwoods are a husband-and-wife team who blog about achieving financial independence through frugal living and a massive savings rate. In my spare time I have been combing their archives and came across this gem examining the Priviledge of Pursuing Financial Independence. It brings up issues I have pondered for a long time but have not been able to articulate. Mrs. Frugalwoods eloquently discusses the privilege that she and her husband possess and how that gives them a head start in being able to retire at 33. The discussion in the comment section is also quite good, and surprisingly civil. I highly recommend this piece.
Our recent addiction to the History Channel’s series Mountain Men led us to wonder if we could move our off-grid adventure up any sooner. We are in good shape to finish off the student loans by summertime and tackling the mortgage is up next. This calculator from Dave Ramsey allowed us to play with a few scenarios and see how a few extra payments can make a big difference in paying it off ahead of schedule. It was all the motivation I needed to get a summer job!
Spencer decided (all on his own!) that dryer sheets are a waste of money. Now when he uses the dryer he adds a few balls of crumpled up aluminum foil. I’m not sure if they actually reduce static but he seems convinced. Good enough for me!
That’s what I’ve got for this week… Is there any misc that I’m missing?
Thank you so much for mentioning my post on privilege–I really appreciate it. I feel like its a topic that’s not broached very often in the personal finance space and so I wasn’t sure how it would be received. Glad to hear you enjoyed it :)!
Interesting tip on the aluminum foil in the dryer–I haven’t heard that one before.
