There Once Was A Grandma Named Carmen…
It’s one of those nights when I’m so tired that I can’t sleep. I’m excited that I got the chance to go home for Spencer’s Grandma’s birthday party. I have to work tomorrow but it turned out his cousin was going there and coming back all tonight. So I hitchhiked. It was wonderful, I got to make silly faces at her adorable baby the whole way.
This was one of the best and most honorable birthdays that I have been to. Spencer’s aunts came in from all over the country and all ten children were there to celebrate with their mom. His aunt prepared a wonderful meal that was enjoyed by all, followed by a simple cake. The highlight of the evening may have been the limericks. I had never heard of this idea, but it is my favorite combination of creative+inexpensive=thrifty!
One of Spencer’s aunts emailed her siblings and asked them to prepare a limerick. Limericks are those funny little poems with two rhyming lines of seven syllables, two rhyming lines of five, and the last line is seven syllables and rhymes with the first. For example: (And we fudged a bit)
Carmen loved to relax and sew,
But with 10 kids it’s go, go, go,
She sent them to bed,
And chose sewing instead,
She never did sleep, don’t you know?!
People had a lot of funny things to say about the lovin’ that goes in to having ten kids. Everyone laughed and had a great time. Here’s the one I shared:
I may marry Spencer it seems,
The thought makes my smiles beam!
He’s a really great guy,
but I just cannot lie,
I actually want his great genes!
Spencer’s grandma really enjoyed her party and was flattered by all of the “work” that went into writing the limericks. This was a great “gift” for us to give because Carmen felt very honored and everyone could participate. Listening to everyone’s attempt at poetry was a riot.
Maybe you could consider something off-the-wall like this for your next birthday party? Carmen couldn’t be happier, and the guests will never forget the fun we had together.
