No Poo For You! (and me too!)
I like to say that I learned my thrifty ways from my mom, but lately I have been passing her up. Even she says I am a little… extreme.
I often try new things and bounce it off a few people before I tell the Internet world. One compliment I have been getting a lot is how healthy my hair looks. Which is great because I quit using shampoo months ago!
I learned about “No Poo” from Crunchy Chicken. It is a “green” blog but we all know how sustainability and frugal living are linked!
I recommend going there for the complete rundown. But the basic premise is: No shampoo. Use a baking soda paste. Rinse with vinegar and water. Ta da!
My hair used to be very fine and flat. I used a lot of volume and texture products. I had to backcomb my hair with a ton of product just to keep it in a ponytail. I used a round brush and blow drier to get a litle volume. Still, my hair would be flat and straight just hours later.
I told my mom about my “No Poo” a long time ago and she thought I was pretty crazy. Then, on a recent visit home, she was playing with my hair and said, “Whoa! Since when was your hair so thick?!”
Needless to say, she is giving up shampoo too!
Now I let my hair air dry and it has better volume than ever. Not only do I save on shampoo costs but I use very little product. I have a piecy layered cut that I sometimes accentuate with a texture product but other than that… no product! I save a lot of time getting ready in the morning. My hair is never greasy even though I wash only once a week.
I buy baking soda in bulk in a cardboard box. It is very inexpensive and easy to recycle the container.
Whether you are green, natural, or frugal, that shampoo has got to go!
