Monday Math Quiz | Clothing
Each Monday Kayla K’s Thrifty Ways offers three tightwad word problems to practice savings calculations.
It takes you 30 minutes to replace a zipper in DH’s Carhartt work pants. The zipper costs $2, while the pants would be $40 to replace. Calculate your hourly wage.
How many times must you wear your versatile Banana Republic black dress that you purchased for $90 in order to reach a $2 cost-per-wear goal?
It takes 12 t-shirts to knit a 3′ x 5′ rug similar to one you would like to purchase for $48. If you were to buy t-shirts strictly for crafting purposes instead of using t-shirts from your rag bag, what is the average maximum price per t-shirt shirt to make your own cost-effective rug?
$40 – $2= $38, the savings on one pair of pants
60 / 30= 2, the number of zippers you can repair in an hour
$38 x 2= $76
You earn $76 per hour by replacing zippers.
I truly believe that a penny saved is a penny earned. Very few jobs pay $76 per hour in non-taxable income.
$90 / $2= 45
You must wear your dress 45 times in order to achieve a $2 cost-per wear.
It is a good thing you selected a dress that you can hand wash, as dry cleaning costs add significantly to your cost-per-wear.
$48 / 12= $4
You can pay up to $4 per t-shirt to make a rug similar to one you would purchase for $48.
It is quite reasonable to pay $4 for a t-shirt. Fifty cents at a garage sale or $2 at a thrift shop is a very common price.
