How to Make Your Own Magnetic Canning Lid Lifter
While purchasing supplies for my mulberry jam I noticed a new gadget- a magnetic canning lid lifter. I understood how the gadget could be useful but was unwilling to add another plastic uni-tasker to my kitchen.
When I got home I decided to make my own.
I tore a square of duct tape and placed a hardware store magnet in the center.
Then I stood a wooden spoon on top of the magnet.
I pressed the edges of the duct tape up onto the spoon.
I secured the magnet by wrapping another square of duct tape around the wooden spoon handle.
I got to test my magnetic canning lid lifter on my first batch ever of jam. It worked great! More importantly, my jam was great. I used strawberries, mulberries, and blackberries.
I am two weeks gluten-free and feeling great, but was a little sad that I could not have toast with my new jam. Today I enjoyed the jam on a cornmeal pancake and am really impressed. It was my first solo canning attempt and I have confidence to try again.
