How to Make Money Designing Knit and Crochet Patterns
Since reviewing Stacey Trock’s book Crocheted Softies, I have become quite a fan of her site and blog, Fresh Stitches. In addition to writing books and contributing to magazines, Stacey also sells patterns in PDF format.
I was very excited to hear her recent interview on CraftyPod detailing how she creates a sustainable living by selling her PDF patterns. She went into great detail describing how she got started designing and selling patterns, how much time she puts into her work, and how she promotes her patterns with social media.
One thing I found especially interesting about the podcast is how Stacey spends a very small amount of time actually designing and crocheting. The majority of her time is spent editing, selling, and managing. She estimates that of the 25 or so hours it takes to make a pattern, only about 5-10 of those hours are spent crocheting.
My favorite marketing tip from Stacey was to offer free patterns. She explained how free patterns attract blog readers to her other patterns and books.
Speaking of free, the podcast is only available for a limited time so check it out soon! Also, check out the free patterns on Stacey’s site, Fresh Stitches. Don’t worry about being tempted to purchase the other patterns; they are reasonably priced at $6 each. As I wrote in my review of Crocheted Softies, the patterns are very high quality and yield adorable gifts. (in other words… worth the money!)
