My months of practice have finally paid off: I played in my first roller derby bout this weekend! I play with a great team that puts me through kick-butt practices. Our scrimmages and endurance drills are the hardest workouts I’ve ever done. Playing with such athletic women makes me feel like I have a lot of work to do. While that’s certainly true, today I had the first glimpse of how far I’ve come.
My coworker, Lori, recruited staff members to race her PE students in their weekly fitness challenge. Teams of two people raced to complete a list including 4.5 miles on a treadmill, 9 miles on a bike, and many, many toning exercises. Since my last “real” workout several months ago my leg press and extension weight has nearly doubled. I also ran 1.5 miles at a 9 minute pace when my best mile time EVER was an 8:06 as a junior in high school.
Maybe Kramer kids CAN run after all?
This afternoon was just the encouragement I needed to try a race later this year. I better sign up quick before I remember that I hate “exercising.”
