A Love Letter to Fareway Stores
My students inspire me every day- some days in more profound ways than others. Today the success of their apple pies inspired me to make a pie of my own!
I chose to make a veggie pot pie with whatever vegetables I found on sale or cheap, expecting a lot of potatoes and carrots. I felt a little silly driving past two HyVee stores to get to Fareway, but Fareway’s prices and service cannot be beat.
I expect a lot from Fareway, but they still impress and surprise me! Fareway matches prices of competitors but they do the research- I don’t have to bring in an ad. I got Dahl’s-match carrots for $.88 and HyVee-match celery for $.77. A bag of discount potatoes, a box of discount mushrooms, and a container of broccoli and cauliflower were $.99 each. Green onions were $.34 for a bunch. My “discount” groceries were in as good as shape what I would have paid full-price for at another store.
I also purchased Crisco and Mrs. Dash for a total of $10.44. I made a delicious meal with leftovers for my roommates and I have lots of veggies left over. The potatoes will be breakfast along with free eggs from my mom and carrots and celery will be snacks for next week.
I applaud Fareway for offering produce at a discount instead of dishonestly selling it a full price, or worse, throwing it away. I will happily drive an extra five minutes to support such a great business.
