Free Knit Pattern: Double Brick Flip Dishcloth

July 30, 2010

I’m having a great time with all of the garter stitches in my new-to-me vintage needlework book.  Like last week’s free pattern, this design is not difficult despite the double-bricks.  Slipped stitches and garter stitch keeps it simple.  Best of all, no ends to weave in!
You will need cotton yarn in two contrasting colors.  [...]

Something Nice

July 27, 2010

“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
In keeping with this advice I will not be blogging for a few days.   I am moving for the sixth time in my “adult” life and am quite cranky about it.  So I do not have very many nice things to say.
I see a minimalism [...]

One Determined Gardener: How to Make Hollyhock Dolls and Use Them to Decorate Cupcakes
Use hollyhock flowers to create adorable little dolls for decorating.  My parent’s home is being remodeled and Mom had to pull up all of her beautiful hollyhocks that decorated her clothesline!  If she had hollyhocks to use this is definitely something she [...]

It’s Okay To Skip a Shampoo

July 24, 2010

No worries thrifty friends!  It is okay to:

Insist on sugar-free yogurt but still weasel some Cosmic Brownies into your grocery cart
(if you’re a server) to always pick change from the ground, but round up the change for your table because you are too busy to count coins
To save on shampoo by wearing a trendy headscarf [...]

Free Knit Pattern: Checker-Square Garter Dishcloth

July 23, 2010

This dishcloth looks deceivingly difficult, but garter stitching and slipped stitches keep it simple.  The stitch pattern is easy to memorize but keeps you interested.
You will need cotton yarn in two contrasting colors.  I used Size 8 needles for a gauge of approximately 4 stitches/inch. The finished size is a generous 10 1/2″ square.

To [...]

Thrifty Fitness

July 21, 2010

My old age is closing in on me… 22 has been a hard adjustment.  I am doing my best to start good habits now because habits formed in the early 20’s tend to last through adulthood.  One good habit I would like to have is exercising on a regular basis.
I can think of plenty of [...]

Introducing my foray into instructional video production…
Kind of!
I am taking a class this summer to learn how to incorporate technology into classrooms.  One alternative form of assessment is having students create videos about what they have learned instead of taking a pen-and-paper test.  To get us in the practice of making videos were [...]

Costly Clogs

July 15, 2010

Financial folk say you should spend no more than 8% of your annual income on clothing… which leaves me the potential spending of $1,152 each year.  Purchasing this one pair of clogs would take up 22% of my annual clothing budget, which is very close to 1/4. Which is a lot.
So: no. No clogs.
Any low(er)-cost [...]

Dear Mom,

July 12, 2010

(a.k.a Jo Kramer of Jo’s Country Junction)
Thank you for taking such great care of me this weekend when I got my wisdom teeth out!  The magazines, the movies, it was all spectacular.  I’m feeling pretty good and can gum around some food, but nothing is quite as great as the rice pudding you made for [...]

Frugal Fashion- 7/7/10

July 7, 2010

Old Navy dress, via thrift: $5
Necklace, via thrift: $1
Sandals, via thrift: $1
Tote, my own: Free
If I splurge on new clothes, which I do from time to time, I like to buy dresses.  This long knit dress can be casual or “dressy” depending on the accessories.  My favorite feature is how low-maintenance dresses are.  I can [...]
