Baking soda is a pretty amazing substance, whether you’re looking to green up your clean up, or save money on cleaning supplies. Oh yes, and it’s great for baking, too. It’s green, thrifty, and convenient. All of my favorite things!
To best take advantage of the thrifty qualities of baking soda, I like to buy in bulk. For the convenience aspect I keep my baking soda in a re-purposed Parmesan cheese container so I can tuck the bulk box away.
The principle of the container for baking soda is much the same as for Parmesan cheese. The spoon side of the lid works great for measuring for baking. The sprinkle side works well for use as a scouring powder or carpet freshening.

I haven’t tried all of the uses, but I do have my favorites, which include
- Baking, of course
- Sprinkling on carpet before vacuuming for a deodorizer
- Scouring powder for dishes and other cleaning
- Deodorizer for closets- I just set some out in a tray

I like to use it to wash my face with. I pour a little in the palm of my hand and mix it with water to make a paste. Its a great exfoliater ! But, you can’t use it too often, it will dry your face out. The parmesan cheese container is GENIUS! I never thought of that!

At our house, we keep a box of baking soda in the frig, when the soda is done keeping the frig fresh, we dump it into our cheese shaker (been doing this for yrs!) and use the ‘used’ baking soda for cleaning. Works great, just don’t eat it. I love your website; linked in from my fave Dollar Stretcher.
I started using an empty cheese shaker years ago to add baking soda to my cat litter box after I scooped it. Works great and is something reused instead of plastic sitting in a landfill for how long?

I use baking soda mixed with water to wash my hair. Started 6 months ago, and I. WILL. NEVER. GO. BACK. TO. SHAMPOO. Couple that with the apple cider vinegar rinse – it’s really amazing what happens to your tresses when you stop weighing them down with soap scum and heavy conditioners. I’m totally hooked.
Hmm… and I’m out of face wash. Coincidence?

Good idea! I love commercials that advertise the “secret ingredient” of baking soda. Why not just use the original?
I’ve heard this before and have yet to try it. I could definitely use some volume. Hmmm….
I reuse my baking soda from the refrigerator by cleaning my commode with it. One box will clean it 3-4 times for a fresh smelling bathroom. Just add and swish with the brush, then flush. No harsh chemicals going into the water and saving money too.
I too use my parmesan cheese container for baking soda, but you can also use it to hold all sorts of stuff…sprinkles for those yummy cut-out cookies for the holidays, craft glitter, old buttons waiting to be re-purposed. Don’t forget to save your plastic peanut butter jars. So much better than the old glass ones!!
