Yogurt Cups/Hoarding

Tra-La!  It’s a soda cup! At our last Family and Consumer Science Club meeting I was offered Coke from a 2-Liter bottle, which is the thriftiest way to drink soda, if you’re interested.  I love me some free coke!  A quick rinse of my almond-snack container, and I was good to go.  This kept my dixie cup free for puppy chow. (or muddy buddies?  This could be a regional term.)

What is the non-regional term for the peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar- covered Chex cereal?

Just curious, speaking of regional terms, if anyone knows what a Sloppy Joe is?  When my parents moved to Iowa they couldn’t figure out what a “Maidrite” was on my sister’s school lunch menu.  When she got home they grilled her and discovered that a “Maidrite” and “Sloppy Joe” are one in the same.  Also, not everyone knows that “Pit Stick” is “Deodorant.”  I was an eighth grader when I figured this out.  In the gym locker room.  Embarrassed, for sure.

Anyways, about that yogurt cup.  Today The Non-Consumer Advocate did a post about Hoarders, the new TV show.  I haven’t seen it before but apparently people have so much junk in their home that it’s not safe for them to even live there.  Some people think my yogurt-cup obsession is a little weird.  I can tell you that I am NOT organized, but I am far from hoarding.

But…

Sometimes I wonder if frugal-ness is linked to hoarding?  Most of my craft projects growing up had to do with whatever fabric my mom didn’t need, or refashioning my old clothes.  Now I can’t seem to let go of clothes because I think how I could re-use or re-fashion something.  Given, going without mainstream craft supplies has made me pretty creative, (Re-purposed yarn? Plastic bag totes, anyone?)  I wonder if I’m a little too sentimental over my craft supplies?

Or is it normal to have sentimental feelings for STUFF?

Please comment, I’d love to know if I’m crazy or just a little eccentric.  :)

Where I am from (KS), a maidrite is basically a “crumbly” hamburger. We put pickles, onion and mustard on them. A sloppy joe has a tomato-type sauce and bell peppers in it. Also known as “Manwich”. To comment on the hoarding tendencies-people that are thrifty commonly are hoarders. Saving it for a rainy day. My dad throws nothing out because “he’ll use it sometime”. When he figures out he needs it, he can’t find it! He also has multiples of many things, because he is so unorganized, he has to repurchase it! I don’t think you’re to that point, but if you find that your stuff is consuming you, you might really think about condensing what you have. Love your site, it’s great to see someone so young not so consumed by materialism. Thanks :)

We call it puppy chow, and maidrites are “loose meat sandwiches” here, which basically is a sloppy joe without tomato sauce. But I am from Iowa as well, so can’t help you out on what other people call them. I came across your blog when it was featured somewhere a few weeks ago..Dollar Stretcher, maybe?… anyway, just wanted to let you know I really enjoy your blog. By the way, I also have the same first and last name as your mom AND live on a farm in Iowa. Kinda spooky…

KayKay we all know you can be a bit of a hoarder!!! LOL- not with everything but definately with things you are saving to turn into homemade-kayla-k-masterpieces!!! Love the blog!!!! As an unrelated side note I am aweful at knitting, I have been practicing but it doesn’t look good……

I grew up in Iowa and it was always Maidrite, so when I went to college I diddn’t know what a loose meat sandwich was-same thing. I also worry about hoarding. I have a hard time getting rid of any clothing wondering what else I could use it for or transform it in to. Of course, it does come in handy from time to time.

When I was in school, they called a Sloppy Joe a “Schoolboy Sandwich”.
