10 Thrifty Ways I Plan to Save $100 in 2010

by Kayla K on December 28, 2009

1.  I’m going to make my Danskos last one more year. My friend who was working as a server while going to nursing school recommended these great clogs to me.  I’ve had my pair for more than a year, but hope to make them last at least one more.

2. I’m going to use up the craft supplies I already have. The yarn for a single sweater could easily set me back more than $100.  Using up the yarn I already have will keep me busy for a good part of the year.

3. I will wear clothes I already have for special occasions this year. I have yet to get over the high-school notion that a special occasion calls for a new dress.  This is my year to get over that, saving me at least $100.

4. I will use my car for long distance travel only. It costs about $50 in gas to visit Spencer or my parents.  I will walk and use public transportation while at school to make sure this is the only money I spend on gas.

5. I don’t need new jeans. And I’m going to keep telling myself that! In the past I’ve reasoned that Gap jeans are worth the cost because they last for a long time although I always buy a new pair before the “old” pair ever wears out.  We’ll see…

6. No more overspending at Goodwill. Yes, you can overspend at Goodwill.  Buying clothes that are a good deal but that I don’t end up wearing are a waste.  $100= two less items of clothing each month.

7. Kickin’ the Diet Coke habit. Pathetic, I know.  I can’t believe how much this stuff adds up!  I’ve already found a difference in my sleep by limiting my caffeine to coffee in the morning.

8. Speaking of wasting money on beverage, I can cut out the alcohol as well. Or at least limit it.  Even a cheap six-or-seven-dollar bottle of wine every week or so adds up.  A nice cup of herbal tea would be a more healthy and inexpensive way to relax in the evening.

9. My classic black puffer coat still be classic next winter. Spice it up with some upcycled accessories and I’ll be good to go!

10. I will love my library even more this year. I didn’t renew my magazine subscriptions and will utilize the library for these instead.  Also, no splurging on new hardcovers.  I’ll research when my favorite authors will have a book out so I can be the first on the wait list.

If I can commit to these 10 simple changes, I will have saved $1000 this year.  This will take a nice chunk out of my car loan.

What simple changes can you make to save $100?

Hi Kayla!
Just found your blog via the dollar stretcher. I am really enjoying it. Just curious on how you did on saving $100 over 2009. I wish I had been as frugal thinking as your are when I was in college. It would have saved me a great deal of heartache and debt following graduation.

Thank you for asking! I set this to post on January 2, but it showed up as January 2 of 2009. These are the goals I’ve set for 2010. I’ll keep you posted throughout the year.
