10-Minute Retro Tote 10-Step Tutorial
I wish I could tell you that my blog has been a little skimpy lately because I have been slaving away over this tutorial. But that would be lying, because this over-sized totes takes very little time to make. 10 minutes and a vintage pillowcase will give you this adorable tote that is great for groceries, laundry, or the beach!
To get started, You will need:
- One 20″x30″ vintage pillowcase
- Coordinating or contrasting thread
Trim the pillowcase to 22″ from the bottom fold.
Trim 3″ from the cut edge for handles.
Cut 3″ from the hemmed pillowcase edge to use for lining.
Rip out the side seam from the 3″ handle piece. Press as one long strip.
Fold the long strip in half with right sides together and sew with 1/4″ seam.
Turn the tube right-side out.
Press tube flat.
Cut in half to make two handles.
With right side of tote facing, center straps 3″ from center of open end of tote and pin in place.
Slip the folded piece cut from the hem of the pillow case over the open end of tote and pinned handles, aligning cut edges of all pieces. Sew around with 1/4″ seam.
Turn lining over to the inside of the tote. Press in place. Sew 1/8″ from the top edge of the tote.
Turn tote inside out. Sew 1/8″ from folded edge of lining.
With tote still inside out, create box corners by pressing side seam/fold to the bottom seam. Sew across the corner 3″ from tote.
Tack tips in to bottom of tote.
And you are finished!
